A Dream In The Grove

(to be published in 2021)

Synopsis:

Robert, a man with early dementia, is determined to understand the recurrent dreams he’s been having before succumbing to his disease. One morning, he’s told he’ll attend a guitar concert to celebrate Columbus Day. This agitates him, for the tragedies he dreams about all occur on October 12th.

In moments of clarity, Robert hopes to find an explanation about his dreams before arriving at the concert, where he fears something tragic may happen to him or to his beloved granddaughter Camila. But, unable to discern between dream and reality, he spends most of the day seeing characters interacting in a magical realistic environment, yet experiencing real tragedies during pivotal episodes of human history, including the Annihilation of Templars in France, the Colonization of the Americas, the Plague, the American and French Revolutions, and the Modern era.

As the day progresses, Robert notices that the main characters are of people who, forced by circumstance, migrate between France, the United States, and Venezuela, walking alongside Afro-Caribbean magical figures. He also notices that these protagonists are dreaming each other, and that certain things keep appearing: a dovecote, pigeons, bees, and a French watch his father left him. Still, it is not until Robert sees himself in the visions, that he realizes the dreams aren’t isolated. He too is connected to the tangle of characters; he’s a big part of the unfolding resolution.
